Message Association on TV. He said that simultaneous, dual engine failure was NOT a contingency that pilots were trained for, even in simulators, because the chances of it happening were considered so remote. All the pilots are trained on single engine failure. And he was a glider instuctor, not just a glider pilot. So if given a choice of all the commercial pilots in the room, I'll take the one who is also the glider instructor. He would be the expert on energy conservation in keeping the jet in the air as long as possible or necessary, and will prob make the best level landing. With no landing gear, all he had to do was catch a wing tip and that plane would've tumbled and torn apart. Not saying he is the only pilot who could've done it, but the odds were prob much better with him.
